Biography

He was Company Sergeant Major of "D" Company, when the 2nd Battalion DLI arrived in France in September 1914. On 20 September, 2 DLI fought its first battle of the Great War at Troyon and Charles Kent was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for rescuing a wounded officer under fire.

In August 1915, he gained the Bar to his DCM when, during the attack at Hooge near Ypres, he persuaded men under very heavy fire not to retreat but to hold their position, which they did for a further 18 hours.

In 1917, he became Lieutenant and Quartermaster of the 20th (Wearsiders) Battalion DLI, ending the War as a Captain.

He was also awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and the Russian Cross of the Order of St. George.

Charles Kent died in 1956.
